Giortes Rokka Festival
On the archaeological site, 6000 visitors are gathering once a year for the full moon concert in the village of Rokka where only 30 permanent residence are living. It is a large, successful sociocultural festival in Crete. Shizuka Hariu / SHSH is invited as the main artist of the festival in 2022.
Full Moon Stage for Rokka
Shizuka designs a circular stage to reflect the form of the full moon this year.
The circular stage emerges on the mountain like the full moon's light.
The circle has a metaphor for protection; therefore, it metaphorically secures the village of Rokka, Kera and the audience during the full moon celebration and performance.
The team is constructing scaffoldings from the village supplier and most of the materials from this region. The temporary theatre provides a diameter of approximately 9 meters. Its shiny striped surface in front of its scaffoldings theatre reflects as the time of day changes by watching the sunset and arising the full moon in the background. In keeping with the concept of reflection, the theme of this year's festival, the stage with its white floor, will float in the light of the full moon in Rokka's sacred Trouli Hill.
Britomartis Lighting Installation
Shizuka gets inspiration from Cretan’s myth. Britomartis is a protective goddess of hunting, fisherman’s nets and traps, and the protector of the moon.
In her design vision, Britomartis arises from the waves and spiralling to the sky. Shizuka made sketches and designed this spiral-shaped lighting installation on top of the stage for the full moon event on the hill.
Her artwork combines the circles-shaped temporary stage and the Britomartis lighting installation. This becomes a large-scale installation as it is a significant communication device between a full moon and the audience via Britomartis.
