Exhibition at PQ2019

The Society of British Theatre Designers co-ordinates the UK exhibits for the Prague Quadrennial. Each country contributing to PQ endeavours to take a professional exhibit and a student/early career exhibit. For PQ2019, we have created Staging Places Studio. Twelve designers were selected from our open call submissions by an industry panel to represent the diversity of work being made throughout the UK.

Dystopian Dream scenography describes a representational space between a dream and the twisted reality.

In the case of Dystopian Scape, the intention was to make a central open space for performers to move freely on stage level but also to move comfortably up a functional ramp that allows for wire action performance. This created three different characters of space: the central open space, the platform with a curved ramp and the nest of performers underneath the ramp.

The central space was used as the main performing area for dance and music. It had stage props such as the three different shades of grey chairs, a thin table, a lampshade and a hanging swing.

The platform sits at the back of the stage and is connected to a curved ramp, where dancers fly with wired-action. The platform also has a long staircase in which the top part is transformable, creating an effect similar to MC Escher’s Relativity, challenging the law of gravity. The horizontal solid wall behind the platform can also be transformed, one moment becoming the vertical floor with a chair and another moment becoming just a vertical wall.

Underneath the platform are lattice elastic layers, which was also a hidden space for dancers and a singer. There are also lights on the inside of this platform that creates shadow visible to the audience of the performers inside.

The overall scenographic design was harmonized in a light grey colour, producing slightly blurred edges of the staircase, ramp, screen, and wall.

In every scene, the scenographic design will give varied sequences from the ground to sky level.  Performers will float in between this dream like spaces alongside the music of Nitin Sawney’s composition of Dystopian Dream.
